Hi All,
I'm waiting (anxiously) for my new gas tank to arrive from The Filling Station for my '47. The original straps are solid and in great shape so I cleaned the surface rust off, painted them up and got new hardware. My questions are
-Was there a rubber cushion or anti-squeak that should go in between the strap & tank? I dont' recall seeing any when I removed the tank, but its probably been out before.
-Does the tank need to be grounded for the sending unit to work?
I have a repro sending unit and it looks 100% like the original one, but with the painted straps and if I put rubber insulators in there, there won't be metal on metal touching the car anymore. Just wanted to check. The schematic from the manual just shows the 1 wire to the sending unit, and no grounds. I have rewired that since the original sender wire was frayed badly.
Just wanted to make sure and not blow anything up :) Thanks as always everyone!

The tank must be grounded for a couple of reasons. One is for the sending unit to work properly. The other is to control possible static charges.

I would suggest adding a ground wire from the sending unit screw to the gas tank strap bolt...I did it because I undercoated the tank to match the rest of the car ( it was under coated from the dealer originally )
You don't want to spend any more time back there than you have too...Go ahead and ground it...!
I don't think you need to bother with anything between the strap and the tank, it should be tight enough that it's not going to shift or move or squeak....

Good deal, thanks for the replies everyone. I'm doing new lines, new fuel filter, new filler neck hose & clamps, gas cap, and the whole 9 yards. I don't want to take any chances or deal with this fuel system again for a long time! This will help make sure its done right. Much obliged.

Keith- I did check to make sure its vented and it says it is...but it a repro so you know how that goes. If it acts up I'll throw the original one on. Thanks for the reminder!

Time to adjust those brakes again. I hate brake work, but it seems every car I've owned needs it. Oh well, stopping is good!
