Are brake drum gaskets necessary when redoing brakes?

I don't think so. I do my brakes without them and everything seems OK.

BTW: I think they may have served some small purpose but can't remember what it was.

I've never even heard of a brake drum gasket. Was it a short term experiment by Chevy?

Its a thin paper gasket that goes on the axle flange before the drum is put on.

...A Stovebolt post thinks it might be a preventive "rust weld" thing...I would have to concur...
