Today I finished replacing the head on a friends 28. It runs great and does not push the water out like it did before.
New problem, in the head there are 2 area's where the valves go in the head which the manual call out putting oil in them. This is to lucubration the valves I think. I filled these up and with a few minutes they were almost empty and when I drove the car and then looked it was all gone. Any thoughts?
Thanks, Bruce

I am no expert but the only lubrication on my 28 top end is the felt pad above the rockers and the felt rings on the ends of the push rods that I skwirt a drizzle of oil on every now and then. Any eccess oil either follows the push rods down to the sump or slides down the outside of the engine for yours trully to mop up.

Probably from 1/4 to half full at the most,or the valve spring action will just pump it out everywhere.I usually have the oil level in mine about 1/8" deep at the most, and it still makes a nice mess. And just keep the felt pad over the rocker gear & valves damp with oil.At least the outside of the block will never rust!

Hi John,
I use the felt pad as a back up only, and too much oil on the pad will go every where. Before each run, or about every week I take off the rocker cover (valve cover for our stateside mates) and directly oil the top of each valve, the top of each valve push rod and the oil hole in each rocker arm. This gets oil directly to where its needed.
I keep the oil pockets in the head about half full at most, any more and the oil can run out under heavy braking and cornering.
Hang on, did I say heavy braking and cornering in the same sentence as Chev 4?
Anyhow I dont have as much oil over the motor since I reduced the amount I put on the felt pad.
I hope that helps.
Cheers
Ray

Some say "Street is neat". I prefer "1928 is great" I have documented my 45 years with a 1928 Chev Tourer, from 1973 to 2018, and regulary add other items that I hope are of interest to others. Your comments are most welcome. The story of the Red Chev can be viewed at http://my28chev.blogspot.com/
