Hello ! I have started the engine check on my 1929 6 cylinder engine. The compression runs 62 to 66 psi. I am thinking of having a rebuild anyway. Here is the problem and what suggestion does any one have for the repair. I removed the Radiator and then the water pump. The lining between the water pump impellor and the cylinder wall is rusted thru. Leaving a rusted out area about 3 inches by 2 inches. My thought on repair is to gas weld a patch in after the engine is striped and hot tank cleaned. Before the new rings and bearing go in.

There is supposed to be a baffle plate which goes into the engine block behind the water pump, i think this is what you are missing , they are available from several suppliers , incuding the www.fillingstation.com

No need to weld in a patch. The baffle is available as indicated by jack39rdstr. Good time to rebuild your water pump while it is out.

Thank you very much Jack. I will look at it again and look in the Filling station catalog.

Thanks for the pictures jack39rdstr, the 1929 engine is different as it sits back father. There is a removable plate. alright. looks to have a rolled flanged edge. well know more when I get it out and the block cleaned up. May just get the ring roll out and try one. looks to be the size of a 1 lbs. coffee can top. Metal before plastic lids. It will not be the first home made one, I am sure of that. thanks for the help all

I believe the baffle plate is brass and welding to cast is probably not possible. Perhaps some of the new "miracle" epoxy would work or an oversized plate could be fabricated.Brazing may be ok , but I would check with a certified welder before putting a lot of heat to the block in that area. Maybe just three or four spots brazed to hold the plate then sealed with the epoxy.

My rebuilder welded the baffle in with copper welding rod. Made about 6 to 8 small beads of copper weld. Worked great and won't crack the cast iron.
