How do you grease the front brake cables on a 31? How can you work in grease along the cable? Is there a tool that will allow grease to be pumped in, if so where can I get one? Is anyone reproducting the brake cables?

Paul
If it isn't broken, fiddle with it anyway so you have something to repair.

Don't know of anyone making replacement front brake cables.

The easiest way to lube the cables is to dissolve grease in stoddard solvent or other light hydrocarbon, suspend the cable from one end and slowly drip the solution down the cable. Add just enough solvent to be able to pour the grease. Once you see lube come out the other end then the cable will be lubed. It is best to use grease designed for boat trailer bearings or other water proof grease. That way it will not be washed out by water.

Yes, originally a special tool was used to insert the grease into the brake cable. The tool is kinda sorta rare and I have only seen a couple of these tools.

On my 30, I used the spray grease made for the chain on my Harley. Sprays like WD-40 but the solvent dries quickly leaving only the grease.

That would be an excellent choice as the chain oil/grease is water resistant.

Well that is what I did, used the spray grease just not the water resistant kind. You will need to work the cable many times to get the grease to the other end.

The motorcycle chain grease spray works great on this -- it's just what Chipper described, but in a spray can. Wicks its way up into the cable, the solvent evaporates, and the grease is left behind. Works like a champ and is not too messy.

All the Best, Chip

I used a set of longer cables that I found at a swap meet ,Reprofiled the bolted (hex end) in a lathe. I made the fixed ends then took them to a local sail boat repair shop. They had a machine that is use to install ends on mast stay cables. For greasing the cables I just boiled them in a tub of grease on the bbq.

Thanks everyone for the input. There are several suggestions that I am sure will work for me. It's too bad the tool is rare, that would have simplified things. Do they make reproduction cables?

We tried to find some new cables but all we could find at best were used ones. Used ones turn out to be way better than broken ones like I had on the car but still its a shame no one makes these guys. We tried a rigging company but they wern't interested in recabling front brake cables for a 1932.

Im sure that any local machine shop could make an addapter to fit either the tapered end or the straight end of the cable. have them install a couple of internal o rings and 1/4 inch npt(national pipe thread ) on the other end .thread it on to your grease gun and your problem solved.
