My 1928 tourer has non-standard glass in the headlights and the aluminium surrounds have been modified to suite.

I have a new pair of aluminium surrounds and would like to bring it back closer to origonal by having some clear glass cut.

My question is what is the thickness of the origonal glass lenses?

Hi John,

Just to let you know I am not ignoring your request for help. I would have had a measurement to you hours ago, except for one thing. I got sick of them rattling around during a rally, pulled them out and put a bead of silicone on both sides, so unfortunatley I am not able to help you. To use the expression:

"If it aint broke Ray leave it alone"

Hopefully by morning our time, some of our Stateside friends will be up and about to give you the thickness.

Cheers

Ray

In Aus. most Chev 4's had flutted glass that matched the flutes on the reflector. It was law in NSW to have these, not sure about other states. The glasses were flutted on both sides, the back was a sharper edge flute and the front a softer edge flute. The glass was known in the industry a 1" broadline and was commonly used in old office windows, it is 3mm thick and had a gasket between the the glass and the edge of the refector.
I'm not sure where you can get these, maybe try Chevparts in Sydney.
All 6 cyl Chevs had fluted glass as well, and were moulded with the word Chevrolet in lens.

Thanks Arvid , I dropped the rim off to my glass guy today and he is going to use 4mm

Chris , My chev lived in norhtern New South Wales in a previous life which may account for the wrong glass and butchered rims.
Seems I am the odd one out here though as everyone else has clear glass.

Hi Yobbo,

No your not the odd one out.

Down here in Vic a few use clear glass. I have passed several RWC tests with no dramas.

Combined with Quartz Halogen globes, it may not be original, but its safe!

Cheers

Ray

Hi Ray,

Thanks for the offer, but the clear has been ok so far, so I will keep with it.

Grant may be looking for some though?

Appreciate the offer.

Cheers

Ray
