Thanks Ray for the reply, I finally got the car running the afternoon. It idles poorly (cannot put the choke in all the way). When the choke & throttle are out a little bit I can find an RPM range where it runs OK, but it still misfires even at higher speeds. Tried to adjust idle setting on carburator but not much help. This car was totally restored about 5 to 6 years ago & only has 641 miles on it so I think mechanically it's OK. Last time it was run everything worked well (3 years ago). Am wondering if this could be a fuel pump problem, maybe lack of fuel or some weird electrical problem. Any more suggestions ?? Thanks, billr :)

I doubt that you have an electrical problem but just in case check the points and be sure you are getting a good hot spark. However it runs with the choke out, so it may be either a vacuum leak or a poorly adjusted idle speed jet or a stopped up idle fuel passage. OOPS! I didn't read your previous post, as Gilda used to say, "Oh well, never mind!"

If the engine runs but misses at all speeds then electrical is most likely but fuel is close behind. What happens when you increase the spark plug gap from 0.025" toward 0.040"? As you change the gap increase the timing a bit (2-4 deg.). I suspect you also have a lean condition. It could be from deposit remaining within the carburetor. A small buildup on the metering rod or in the low speed jet (idle tube) will cut fuel to air ratio and cause misfire. Because of head design '31 engines have a lean condition at the spark plug when everything is right.

Thanks for all the replys,
Turns out the poor idling problem was due to residue buildup in the carburetor. I removed the carburetor, took it apart, & thoroughly cleaned everything, then replaced all gaskets, etc. I think the problem was in the idle tube & nozzle assembly. The car runs like a dream now. Thanks again for everybodys help

I really like to hear the problem solved part,as we offer a lot of advice and on a very rare almost never, occasion the advice is not so good.
