i just learned a lot about grease. i opened the front wheel of a 35 year parked chev and found the old grease hardened so i couldn't scrape it off with a screwdriver. the lighter components apparently evaporated, leaving a hard wax like stuff. i finally soaked it in solvent all day, dug some off and out between the ball bearings with a tiny screwdriver, soaked it some more, did all the standard things, and next day got it clean to repak. makes me suspicious of greasing things like the brake cables where i can't get the stuff out.

Greasing things like cables is nothing to worry about, it is greasing things and letting them sit unused for decades!
