I posted a message a while back about my fathers 1939 Master 85 2 door 6 cylinder with the oversized engine (4" pistons). We are still wondering how rare this is and how it would effect the value of the car, which he is looking to sell. I have some serial numbers from the car and engine if that will help anyone. VIN# 21JB0111733, Engine serial# 2268441. It is the original engine that came in the car from the factory. He had to put a new set of rings in it years ago, this is how he knows the pistons are oversized. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Hi Shipperman: As stated in the replies to your question by others back on April 6th, your pistons cannot be 4" because the overbore (1/2") would definitely be into the water jackets of the cylinder block since the bore on a 1939 216 cu. in. engine is only 3 1/2". No doubt that the pistons are over size, but they cannot be 4"! Your engine serial number indicates that you do have a 1939 216 cu. in. engine however, and the VIN also indicates that your car is a 1939 Master 85.

Hi Shipperman, Is it possible that the 4" has been confused with .040 oversize pistons? If the head is ever removed again, check the markings on top of the pistons and MAKE A MEASURMENT. Sure would like to know the ending on this story.

As antique mechacanic states, it is entirely possible that the pistons are over size to size0.040, it is also possible that your dad had to order a set of one time clean up rings for the car which as I recall were available for the 216 and to be used for an overhaul which took place after the engine had been bored to Maximum which is 0.040
