I recall a year or two back a tech article in the G&D about the proper adjustment of the torque tube ball joint that offered tips to properly install and tension to prevent (minimize) leaks. I've searched the online tech articles and other web sources without success. Does anyone recall the article? Additional I read some info in a Filling Station tech article about adding a 1/2 pint of gear lube to the ball joint during assemble to prevent premature failure. It spoke of a plug in the trans tail housing to add the fluid. My trans doesn't have a plug, but I might consider adding one. Any thoughts on that?

All information and personal experience is appreciated.

The procedure for adjusting your torque tube ball should be described in your shop manual. At any rate, you add or subtract shims between the ball retainer and the collar until the torque tube ball will move up and down easily when tapped with a hammer. If the torque tube ball is raised and it falls back down under its own weight it is too loose. If the torque tube ball can't be moved when tapping it with a hammer then it is too tight.

You need to buy a shop manual, best money you can spend. Add 1/2 pint by pulling speedo gear and adding fluid.

I agree with Bob. I just worked on mine.
According to the manual, you should be able to just rotate the ball assembly by hand if properly adjusted. If not, add or remove shims. Add 1/2 pt of gear lube through speedo gear hole after all is assembled.
Buy the manual--best money you'll ever spend!!

Nowhere does it tell you that you mush have the "U" Joint apart and the drive line dropped down out of the way.

After you make your adjustments then take it back apart and re-connect the "U" Joint and drive line.

"Otherwise you could not move the ball joint to see if you have the correct number of shims (gaskets).
