At the risk of being revved by Chipper or Junkyard Dog, what is the best grease to use use in the grease cap for the water pump. Would a modern marine type grease do the job or is it best to use older type grease such as graphite base grease? Cheers, Alan

Hello Alan,
I picked up a can of Lubriplate grease from the Filling Station (VT-27 if I remember correctly). As I recall it is the actual grease (i.e. same formulation) as what was originally used in the water pumps for the `31, and perhaps others as well. The can I have also has a sticker on it that says No. 115, L0040-001. This might be the Lubriplate grease number. I can take a photo in the morning if you would like (not quite sure what time it is on your side of the globe but it is a quarter to midnight in the Midwest here).
Hope this helps,
Respectfully submitted,
Rusty Berg

Thanks for the info, however the Filling Station cannot send grease on o/s freight. I did a search on Castrol Australia web site and found a product that might do. Castrol Ultratak Grease is a multipurpose lithium complex grease which has special properties in wet environments. Ultratak gives the ability to build adhesion and tackiness in the presence of water, also has excellent resistance to corrosion. For you Techno's out there. What do you think?

The original style water pump grease is a calcium based make up.I have an old "Golden Fleece" can from the late '40's to early '50's,and it has "water Pump Grease" inked on to the old container. The grease looks like baby cack in colour, but it's the proper grease for water pumps.Penrite Australia also make the same grease as well.Try and give them a call.

White lithium grease is all you need for the waterpump.

There are several lithuim based lubriplate products and # 115 is what you want. You can check out it's properties on the lubriplate website or check with one of their distributors in Australia- Atom Supply-Cloverdale ph. 61-8-9351-3600 or Neilson Lubrication Pty Ltd-Pendle Hill-NSW 2145 ph. 02-9636-9399.

Thanks, I have contacted Atom Supplies and they don't carry the 115 grease. I'll give the other company a go.
Cheers, Alan

I was using Marine Grease for a little bit myself until I ran into someone who told me you need to use the special grease because it breaks down in water. Excess grease could get introduced into the cooling system and if you are using something like regular or Marine Grease that does not break down in water then that can actually clog internal cooling lines and impact your engine's ability to cool.
