Anyone have good / bad things to say about the repop AC fuel filters? I'm looking to replace an original one on my '47 after the old threads have cause it to leak. Every original one I've seen leaks...so are the repros any better?

Thanks all,

Some of the rubber gaskets supplied with them tend to deteriorate…I have replaced a carb do to this flaw and no longer use a filter.I do not think the AC Filter is correct for the 47,it is not for the 48,it is a Muraine Durex

I have one original and one repo. Been looking at swap meets and flea markets for another original. I would not go without a filter as I was stuck with a bee in the fuel line one day and dirt in the needle and seat another day. The repo looks and works O.K. but just does not have the AC cast in the glass or body. The repo filter element works in the original.

Chef, this is GREAT info and I appreciate the pics. I will be on the hunt from here on. Repro doesn't look half bad. I still have the bronze filter insert I guess I could re-use. I don't have the spring. The repro looks like it uses paper and no spring, right?

Thanks again for the pictures. Nice collection chevy

Unfortunatly all the glass bowls are different sizes so they are not interchangable

Hi Daryl,

Might be worth an ebay search to find a correct filter for your '47. I looked at reproduction AC filters for my '54 3100 and learned, as noted above, that the AC badge was not on filters until after 1956. So I bought a correct Durex Moraine filter on ebay.

The GM fuel filter accessory that Chevy sold for your '47 was probably a #986128 Durex. Shallow glass bowl with thumbscrew bolt though the bowl.

I have only seen one shallow bowl Durex #986128 on ebay. I recently found it on ebay for a friend's '48 truck. Only $35 and it looked perfect ... body, bowl, thumb screw, and metal filter element.

If the ebay link above doesn't work, search for item #300638610178.

Here is a 1949 Motor Age ad with close up pic of the filter

Here are some more pics of 986128 filters.

Don't forget to cut a new gasket for the bowl. See this Cadallic bulletin - lower right corner.

Carter after-market fuel filters also show up on ebay pretty often. Some of them could have been a period appropriate filter for your '47.

< More info from an old VCCA post >

I bought this Durex Morane GM #986640 filter for my '54 3100 on ebay. I believe that this model started production after 1951. These deeper bowl Durex filters with the wire bale holding the glass bowl are on ebay fairly often.

By the way, it looks like the spring is upside down in the Durex Morane filter with the deeper bowl and bale in the center of the first picture in chef-chevy's post. Hold "Ctrl" and tap "+" to enlarge this picture to see the position of the spring in this Morane ad.

Daryl -

On second reading of your post, I noticed that you said that the "threads" on your filter are leaking. Do you have the shallow bowl Durex #986128 in my post (above)? Is the leak where the thumbscrew enters the glass bowl? If so, do you have a gasket between the thumbscrew and the glass bowl? Cut a small cork "donut" gasket to use between the thumbscrew and the bowl, and see if that stops the leak.

If your glass bowl is held to the pot metal body with a wire bale and the leak is between the bowl and body, I may have a simple fix for that.

Lonnie & everyone thank you a great deal for the detailed pics, documents and advice. This helps me track down what I need to find to make Oscar a happy, well-fed old Chevy!
