Just did a valve job on a 28. Professionaly reground seats and new valves. Runs great on idle but when I take my foot off the clutch the engine stalls. Took it out this morning and had a tough job just getting it back in the shop. Stepped on the acclerator but again the second I take my foot off the clutch it stalls. Motor has good compression...Maybe the valve springs???

Actually you have not given us a good explanation to diagnose the problem. Your problem could be in the transmission, clutch, timing, engine assembly, ect. Can you give us a better explanation?

Ray it shifts into gear just as it did before. I can rev the engine. When I take my foot off the clutch or put it in gear the engine starts to stall. I have opened the throttle on the column to keep it at idle and keeping it in neutral it runs fine. It only looses power when I put it in gear and take my foot off the clutch. I am thinking that I may have the new valve clearances too tight which may not allow the valves to seat properly. Read this in an old manual. Your thoughts would be appreciated...Charles

I think that would be a place to start. Then continue on with a complete check of all the variables. Point set, timing. Does the car move if you hold the speed high and then place it in gear, then release the clutch with the transmission in any gear? Typically, an engine that runs good at idle, and then stalls, could be fuel starvation, or electrical, all specs set correctly. Keep us posted.

Ray will do. Yes the car moves when I press the accelerator but stalls with the clutch out. I think I have it narrowed down to the valves. I set the clearance when they were cold. The repair manual states to set them when they are hot. will try to tomorrow. A lot of rain headed to Texas tonight and tomorrow. Shop is at the back of the property. I also have a 27 1 ton truck that has been in the family since 34. That's the next project. All set to run with new rods, wiring etc.

charles,
Did the vehicle move fine before the valve job? Or was the engine not running before? If it moved fine before then it's safe to eliminate the clutch and trans. as the problem areas.

Yes the car moves when I press the accelerator but stalls with the clutch out. That condition needs some explanation.

Have you checked the transmission to be sure that the gears are all free and there is not some trash holding a gear from turning? Since you have to take off the top to install the engine/transmission combination something could have fallen in.
My other thought is that the cam timing may be off. A common problem is improperly marked timing gears for 4 cylinder Chevrolets. It was so common that there is an explanation in the '28 Repair Manual of how to count the teeth from the keys to get timing right. If far enough off the engine will have no power.

Could be the indirect result of a valve or cam issue, but it seems to me the car has the classic symptoms of a too lean mixture. Most cars would do exactly the same on a cold morning if not enough choke introduced.

Thanks for the help but I what I uncovered yesterday has me baffled. I checked the timing on the distributor and reset it. Took the number one cylinder to TDC and moved the distributor rotor so that the rotor was positoned and point at the number one cylinder. Cranked it up and it fired right off. Let it run....accelerated the motor and boy did it run great. Turned it off...tried to restart it and it wouldn't start. Went back through and check number one at TDC, checked the rotor on the distributor and found that it now pointed at number two even with the number one piston at TDC. Reset it again. Tuned on the key and it fired right up. Let it run. Turned it off. Tried to start it again and it wouldn't start. Cranked the number piston to TDC, check the rotor and it was pointed at number two. some how it is slipping. I have checked the screw that holds the distributor in place and it is tight.

Is the screw that clamps the distributor in the advance/retard plate underneath the distributor tightened up?If it's loose, the distributor may turn and throw out the timing.

Quick question..on a 28 how many screws are there to hold the distributor in the block. I am referencing the side screws that go into the block. My 27 has two but the 28 shows only one but a place where a second screw should be. Looks as if the hole has not been tapped or it has benn pluged...

Some say "Street is neat". I prefer "1928 is great" I have documented my 45 years with a 1928 Chev Tourer, from 1973 to 2018, and regulary add other items that I hope are of interest to others. Your comments are most welcome. The story of the Red Chev can be viewed at http://my28chev.blogspot.com/

Can you post a picture of the block area around the distributor?

What engine are we talking about? To a 490 (1916-22) or later year model?

He's talking about a 1928 engine.Perhaps it should be moved to the appropriate forum to get more responses?

He could also be in the Mechanical Forum under Mr. Goodwrench but think that he will get more looks here than there.

If he were to browse through the "School is in Session" he might pick up some pointers that may help. Particularly the section about mating the cam and crank gear.

Hi, The distributer in a 28 engine is held in position by a plate that clamps around the body. That clamp is then bolted to the block with a screw that allows the distributer to move for the advance/retard. Some of your problems could be that the distributer is moving in the clamp. If the distributer gear was loose, the rivet on the gear will need replacing.
