my friend bought a 38 frd from a guy out of state, owner said he had to find the title the truck was deliverd with a bill of sale with vin# that matched the truck vin# tag. My friend and I both tryed to get in contact with owner with no luck, dodges all calls and emails.Is there a way to get this truck titled in the state of Michigan, We went to s.state office and they said we need to get title from owner. I dont think that will happen, Any addvice on what to do, thanks

Just buy a 38 chevy title and put it on the road.
Otherwise, almost every state is a headache at dmv and costly too.

Each state is different so, what works in Michigan may not be the same as others. Some states did not issue titles and therefore a bill or sale was used to transfer ownership until the 80s when the Feds got involved.
Apply for a "lost" title. Many states will issue a replacement for a lost title. It can be in the state the car came from or Michigan. Most states purge records for vehicles that have not been registered for 7-10 years. Some therefore will issue a replacement title if one is "lost". Often you will have to sign an affidavit verifying ownership. Or there is the "bonded" title route.

thanks for the help Does anyone know if they even had titles for the 1930s to 1940s seems like with trucks that they might just have bills of sale. Is there some sites that may help with this, thanks CG35

Most states are titles and registrations-very few just bill of sale and the same goes for 1938. All depends on the state.
Anything over 15 years old in NY for example is a registration-which acts as a title.
Clear as mud, eh? That's why I said just buy a title and go enjoy yourself. Life is too short for dmv and the governments regulations in my book. Sure there are others on here who would disagree with me....
