Hi chevyguy 35, I would sure try to get hold of the title from the seller, but if that proves imposssible, you may be able to get a "Bonded" title: http://www.ehow.com/how_6141923_do-title-untitled-vehicle_.htmlLooks like you'll have to copy and paste this link to Michigan's bonded title info: https://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&q=cache:_FKgDEOonAYJ:www.michigan.gov/documents/tr-121_19890_7.pdf+Bonded+car+title+Michigan&hl=en&gl=us&pid=bl&srcid=ADGEESiY5ApG6EQGKfhG-IPKIgNxU555u_sj_LflHDOMA1eyOqaAvwZi02-LQVWGI-ItWr7i2aq8l8fenQhjBHy9P6QANgGfiFIQUX8DRB5osrUpX2FdJ-RUDFN4qjISYr2XcaHnPa4E&sig=AHIEtbQ6j7MtHBVJanFxiMGoVO9fr3B3Aw Good luck with this, and let us know how it turns out. Happy Motoring, Dan

Just buy a 38 chevy title and put it on the road. Otherwise, almost every state is a headache at dmv and costly too.

Each state is different so, what works in Michigan may not be the same as others. Some states did not issue titles and therefore a bill or sale was used to transfer ownership until the 80s when the Feds got involved.
Apply for a "lost" title. Many states will issue a replacement for a lost title. It can be in the state the car came from or Michigan. Most states purge records for vehicles that have not been registered for 7-10 years. Some therefore will issue a replacement title if one is "lost". Often you will have to sign an affidavit verifying ownership. Or there is the "bonded" title route.
How Sweet the roar of a Chevy four!

Most states are titles and registrations-very few just bill of sale and the same goes for 1938. All depends on the state. Anything over 15 years old in NY for example is a registration-which acts as a title. Clear as mud, eh? That's why I said just buy a title and go enjoy yourself. Life is too short for dmv and the governments regulations in my book. Sure there are others on here who would disagree with me....

I hope for your sake that nobody ever steals your car and then gets a phony title for it (when government is not watching). Good Luck with that...ED
I was only wrong one time in my life so far. But that time I was right, and only thought I was wrong....ED
