OK, now that you guys solved my brake shoe problem, I wanted to ask opinions on another brake question. On my 38 Master Deluxe, I have replaced all four wheel cylinders, the master cylinder and all the brake line tubing. In order to fill the system with new brake fluid, I have bought a brake bleeder kit that has a hand vacuum pump. My intention is to fill the master cylinder with fluid, then pull a vacuum from each wheel cylinder bleeder fitting, one wheel at a time. Hopefully, this will pull the air out and pull the fluid in from the master cylinder. Does this method sound reasonable? Anybody suggest any tips or other methods? thanks
Ervin

Your plan is logical. Just be sure the master cylinder is full at all times. I would suggest you start with the wheel cylinder the greatest distance from the master cylinder.

That is the way I do it, My MityVac has instructions, I will look them up and post a copy here if you like or I can email them. not much to it sometimes you will get air bubbles incomeing to the reservoir and the air is leaking around the outside the bleeder valve and the hose to the reservoir, ,that makes you keep on bleeding after all the air is out of the system.

My only addition to the brake bleeding technique is that when you finish with the last wheel (shortest distance from the MC)check the longest distance wheel one more time to make sure all air is gone.

I bought a MityVac because they claimed it made brake bleeding a one-man job. Right... if you are a man with four arms! Between filling the tank, loosening the bleeder, operating the Vac, tightening the bleeder, adding to the MC, and over and over, and doing all this while trying to keep that darned hose nipple from leaking.... I was ready to kill Mr. MityVac himself! If I had had a helper to keep the filling duties in check it would have been much easier (and cleaner), but then I might as well have done it the old fashioned way. Now, when I can't find a helper I use a stick cut just the right length to brace the brake pedal to the floor . It's slow but it works! SPEEDLINE[ January 05, 2002: Message edited by: Speedline ]

I may do it the lazy way with my Mityvac. I suck the air out of the bottle watch the gauge, then with a thin boxend wrench while holding the mity vac in one hand, use a hand to hold the hose on and the other hand to turn the wrench, just crack the valve suck all the fluid out of the master cylinder and use the other hand ( the one with the 16'flex-arm to put more fluid in the master cylinder and with the other eye ( the one on the 21' flex stem) watch to be sure you don't overflow and get fluid on the paint! Notin' to it. Wiley E Martian....

I used the Mityvac to bleed my 41 Chevy. It was a good workout for the arms. (Lots of pumping starting with all new lines and wheel cyls!) Just to be sure, I finished up by having my son press the pedal and bleeding the old fashioned way...

Ervin. Surely and undoubtly you have someone that can help you bleed the brakes on your '38. All these fancy gadgets sound good until you try to use them. Some of the above replys verify this. I have used my kids, wife and neighbors (at different times) to assist me in bleeding the brakes on many old cars. The latest is my '41 Coupe. I had a lot of trouble completing my brake job because I did not rebuild my master cylinder. I just knew it was not the MC but it was. One of the holes had rusted over and the fluid could not return to the resivoir. Have all four wheels off the ground. Fill the MC and get your box end wrench and go under the car. Have someone push the brake for you and release the valve on each wheel. Do each wheel until you have a steady stream (no bubbles) and go to the next wheel. Start with the wheel the furthest away from the MC. This is guarnteed to work with minimal effort. Keep the MC full.Try it you will like it. JIM

Yep, and his last post was on April 17, 2003. He probably isn't even on Chevy Chatter any longer.

We may not be fast with a reply, but we are accurate.

Maybe I should read the fine print before I post a reply. I did't notice the 2001 date. Oh well thats the way it goes. I don't have much to answer or write about since the Chat Chapter hit a snag. We should know a little more about our BOD before we vote. Sounds like they don't have any orginization. I was looking forward the Chat Chapter. I'll be a little more observent from now on. JIM

No matter what JAR41, it's still good information when we do a search.
I think I'm a fairly wise person because I'm smart enough to realise I'm not too bright.
