Love it! The first year 1936 version had a fixed bed, after that from 1937-1942 the bed was removable, and a trunklid could be put on. Then you wouldn't have to "love it or hate it"...

It was a tough decision, truck or trunk...? Truck or trunk...?

Actually this was a business coupe, after all.
And this means business...!

And who knew...? You might have to pack-up for Cali-forni...!

The spare goes in the same place as in the business coupe. It's under the raised deck and the pick up box slides in on top of the raised deck. Then there is a door that hangs on to the bottom of the box to cover the lower spare and tool area. It has two T-handles that lock. They are the same as the rumble lid handle. There's one on each outer area to catch the lower part of the drip rail when they are turned into a closed position.

Thanks for the informatiom, I didn't know that much about that type bed. Did GM make the beds or are they supplied by the dealer and installed by the dealer.

GM made them... The whole car has it's own style number, so checking the tags will tell you if it's a genuine GM model, or if someone just built a bed for their coupe. That was known to happen too!

I am currently working on the restoration of the bed for my 1938 coupe/coupe pick up (most of it is now in primer). I found the bed in Kansas (eat your heart out, Tiny!). Later, I was lucky enough to locate an unscathed lower panel (which as mentioned hides the space for the spare tire)--this piece is almost impossible to find. This winter I cut the floorboards for the bed. I have all the pieces except for the upper front edge/lip, which sits down on the deck flange (when the trunk deck is off). I think I can fabricate this without too much trouble. I hope to finish up most of this during the summer. A great VCCA member, Lloyd Henige, who has many beautifully restored Chevys, has a 1939 Coupe Pickup and has been very kind and helpful to me during this restoration process. One of these days, when I get it together, I'll post a picture.

Those coupe-pickups are really something. Nice link Tiny. Good info.

A Southern Oregon fellow some of us know showed a 39 last year at Forest Grove (Ore.) Concours d' Elegance. Exceptional car.

Here's a LINK to a picture of it at that event. (Scroll down, the picture is about five rows down on the left.)
