time to lube the cable and get it all back together. i don't see how to remove the driven cable from the sheath. the only access is the end held in by a c clip but i am half (or three fourths) afraid to pull it far enough out to take that clip off. if the clip comes off, does it then come out the other (square drive) end?

Yes!

The cable will pull out far enough to remove the "C" clip.
