Were the fenders painted with the body (and welting)attached on the solid color cars or were they painted seperately? My question is; what color would the original welting be painted, or was it black? Thanks. ron

Fenders, bodies, radiator shells, etc were painted separately and fender welt (anti squeek) was added at assembly. Black is the only color available today so is acceptable. (unless you wish it use VW Beetle welt that was manufactured in colors to match the paint). Seems I recall evidence that orignal welting may have been colored to match paint but can't confirm this.....the parts book does not indicate a variety of colors. (group 8.205)

What is the best way to install the welt..Hang fenders loosely and slot the welting? Or mark for holes and put bolts throught holes.

My wife had a 1951 Olds 98 that still had "detachable" rear fenders. That body was used on Buicks and Cadillacs up thru 1953.So that would be my guess off hand. The 1948 Chevrolet was the last Chevrolet passenger car to use welt. Years ago that was the first clue if a car was repainted. The welt was difficult to mask and if it was painted body color it was obivous that the car was repainted. The "upper level" Chrysler products used chrome (formed metal) welt in the '40's.
