I recently got a 1959 belair w/ 2 barrel rochester carb. When first started cold when I put it in gear and step on the gas it releases the choke and dies out. Once warmed up it runs fine. The automatic choke on the side of the carb is set on richer. Would the spring inside the housing be the problem, if so where do I get this spring? Also what does the throttle return check valve do?
Also where is a good source for mechanical parts for this year chevy. thanks

The choke thermostatic spring was not sold seperatly, it came with the cover.
First I would adjust the choke thermostatic spring tension. With the engine completely cold the choke shold snap completely closed with some tension. When the engine is statred the choke must opem about a quarter of an inch and continue to slowly open farther until fully openafter obout 10 minutes of running the engine.
The throttle return was useds on the 1958-1964 automatic transmission models to make the idle come down slowly when the foot was removed from the accelerator. If the engine speed drops to idle too fast the drive shaft/U joints make a clunking noise. Also if the car is equipped with Turboglide it prevents the engine from stalling is the accelerator is punched down for a start and quickly released. It was used on 1950-1952 Power Glide cars for the same reason.
Most mechanical parts are available from real parts stores like NAPA, etc.

Chevgene,
Thanks for the reply. I went to Napa and could not find the spring. If it is damaged or weak where would I get one. Are there companies that specialize in these years for mechanical parts? Also Napa asked me for the numbers on the carb 2jet rochester but I don't see any?

I'll check things out as you stated. thanks again!
