I pulled the dist. to ck. vac. adv. (no good) put dist. back in with old vac. adv. .....brought #1 up and stabbed dist....now it wont start and backfires thru exh. ...am I 180 out?....1954 235 eng. thanks Virg

I always put a finger in #1 hole when turning the motor over. When I feel a puff of air,stop and line up the timing mark. Then drop the dist. in on #1.

I did bring it up to a puff....should I look to see if the timing mark on the flywheel in showing? Virg

I think that your 180 off. If your unsure watch the rocker arms as you turn the motor over. Watch for the #1 intake valve to open, this is letting fuel mixture into cylinder, then the piston comes up squeezing the mixture and making compression, the rotor points to the #1 terminal on the distributor cap and sends spark to the spark plug. After the explosion the piston goes down, then when it comes back up the rocker on the exhaust side moves and opens the exhaust valve letting out burned up stuff. Don

Finally after sever attempts it starts but runs rough..at least it starts now to fine tune....I will mark things from now on before pulling....Virg
