I hope that you didn't interpret my questions as criticism. When I asked "Why?" and "What do you need or want that the six volt system does not do?" I was trying to get more information on what you wanted to fix or accomplish. Was it hard starting? Was it brighter headlamps? Was it use of 12v radio or other accessories?

I assumed that you actually already knew that it was possible. Guess that might have been a mis-interpretation. We finally did find out that the use of a 12volt battery would be more convenient and possibly less expensive.

I am sorry if you got upset by the answers that you got and offer an appology if I was part of it.

I am trying to accomplish faster starting, not having to buy a specific battery for this car that I can't use in anything else when the car is sitting for months, ease of buying a 12 volt battery anywhere, ability to jump start this car if need be with any modern car coming down the road and so on. Yes you can run the starter on 12 volts without harm. Why spend the money on an ugly alternator when you can alter the original generator to produce 12 volts. The only gauge that power goes through is the ammeter and you can still use it unaltered. The gas gauge is mechanical.

Paul I solved my problem of the six volt battery long ago, My trolling motor on the bass boat wears two six volt batteries in series. Now I also have another source for a fully charged six volt battery when needed, My wife has an EZGO golf cart with 6 six volt batterys, when they were renewed last year I used tractor batteries with the top auto style terminals and used the thumbscrew connectors like those on my boat batterys, Tractor batteries that have about 20% more amp hours than a standard cart battery is also about $50 cheaper for the set of six than the cart batterys at a cart shop.

Moedip, that is the way it works alright, and you can leave the regulator, just remove the Gen and Field wires that go to the generator, hook the single wire from the alternator to the batt terminal on the regulator (it is just there as a single terminal ) and for show, this will let the ampmeter continue to work the same . If you want you can do this with a 6 volt single wire alternator and keep your six volt system, but use a higher output alternator.

P.S. to my post just above this one, I am having a Warn 2500# wench installed in the new covered trailer and I am going to mount two six volt batterys in series inside the trailer to power the wench when it isn't hooked to the tow vehicle, charge them with the 12 volt tow vehicle, and I can have 2 spare six volt batterys for the old cars. Yeah!
