I'm watching my distributor as I gun the throttle...It's advancing but returns to idle position even when RPM's are sustained...Is that normal..? I've checked my vacuum lines and their tight...Thanks, Kevin

At slow idle speed the advance is not getting any vacuum so the distributor will be in the retarded position which is all the way clockwise. At a fast idle the throtle plate is moved enough to expose the vacuum port in the throat of the carburetor so the distributor will advance in the counter clockwise direction. When under load for any reason the vacuum will drop and the distributor will go to the clockwise position.

Thanks, Gene...The engine has been running a little erratically lately...While under the hood this morning, I see some gas dripping from the top of the float bowl ( very slight ) and I'm experiencing erratic idling speeds and it stalls upon quick stops...I thought I recall you saying any float bowl leaks on Carters are a bad thing...I hate to say it but it ran better with the old Rodchester...Kevin

The Rochesters are the leaky ones. You may have some dirt in the low speed jet. Switch #3 and #4 spark plugs wires. Remove the air cleaner and start engine. Step on the gas hard a few times so it back-fires through the carburetor. This will blow out the low speed jet if that is the problem.

Wow Gene, love the trick for "cleaning" the carburetor......
I run my old IH with no vacuum advance as the diaphragm in mine is shot and its a $260 part!!! She's a little sluggish uphill but....

I remember the last Gene mentioned that old "trick", I said that "if it didn't clean yer carb...least it scared off all the stray animals...!" in your neck of the woods...lol
And I hate when you can get it to back-fire without even changing the plug wires...! Ha Ha
I saw a seller on Ebay last week had many vacuum advance units, don't recall one for IH, though . When I'm looking for a particular part on Ebay I do an advanced search, I think it is, where they'll send an "alert" to your Email when that particular part "surfaces" on their site...Very convenient when you don't have the time...
