The threads that hold the steel clamp to the pot metal cap have given up. I'm tempted to try retapping to 5/16" from 1/4", but when dealing with pot metal, I need some advice. Maybe a new cap makes more sense.

Tend to agree with JYD. the last thing you want is the cap bouncing off the hood,windshild etc. The quality of the cap at the filling station is very good.Well worth the price .

If you are successful then bed the nut into epoxy to retard future corrosion which is the cause of all the problems with those caps. Steel next to pot-metal is not a good thing particularly with hot water vapor. Can you say electrolytic corrosion?

Can you say electrolytic corrosion? No! Well maybe if I said it VERY slowly. But if I said it quickly I'm liable to stutter!
