Where would I find the vehicle Identification Number on the body of a 1936 Chevrolet 2 door Master sedan?
I just purchased this car and when I go to register it, the local Motor Vehicle Department people actually come out to look for the car's ID number on the body, not the engine.
Thanks, Peter Z.
My Chevy is over 70 years old and still running great. I hope I keep running cuz I just turned 81 !!

Here's my 10 cents' worth... Canadian cars are easy as the data plate with serial no., engine no. and body no. are all there on the firewall or were when they were built!
US cars had two plates: the Fisher Body plate which had the Fisher plant code and sequential no. and trim/paint which was under the hood and I think near the 'Car Serial Number' plate which in '37, and I assume was the same in '36, was 'Stamped on plate on right front side of body under hood'. In earlier years closed cars had the no. stamped on a plate on the right front sill. HOWEVER these plates used to rust off it seems, or be removed on repainting and never replaced. Also, back in 1936 most if not many States used the engine no. for title purposes thanks to Mr H. Ford.

The serial number plate on a 1936 is under the front floor mat next to the right door opening. Prior to 1955 most states used the engine number for registration.

Thanks for the information. That will make my life a little easier.
Florida,or the local DMV folks, are a little weird about identifying the car. They seem to think there should be a modern VIN type plaque.
