Hi, spring is just around the corner? I need some help decoding the numbers on my coupe.
car # 6HB06-14652
engine # I 769648 casting # GM 838710

ID plate
style # 38-1217
body # 05913
trim # 69
paint # 229

transmission # 590822 GM5 C228

are all the number 1 to start the engine numbers stamped like an I.
I still need help with the ID plate code & car #. grant

6=car assembled at the Oakland, CA. factory
HB=1938 Master
06=assembled in June
14652 is the assembly sequence

Engine numbers ran from 1187822 through 1915446. Your engine number is actually 1769648.
All 1938 blocks had the 838710 casting number
38-1217=1938 Master business coupe
body #5913 is production sequence number at that plant and for that body style. The first 0 indiactes body made at Fisher Body plant at Oakland

Trim 69=tan mohair upholstery - no other choices
paint #229=Wood Leaf brown metallic color

The 590822 is the casting number for 1937-1939 transmission case.

They are all like that. The I was used rather than the number 1
