I have heard it said that you can always tell where a Chevrolet has been parked. There will be three oil spots in line. Front main, rear main, and transmission.

Sounds like your transmission and U joint retainer are to full of oil and that the seal behind the driveshaft bushing is leaking since your rear axle is filling up with transmission fluid.

Migration of gear oil from transmission to rear end is common on 35 STD. This can be cured by replacing the rear transmission bearing with a sealled or shielded bearing and replacing the filler plug on the universal housing with a zerk fitting and packing the universal housing with chassis lube. Email me for more details if you wish to persue this solution.

I would suggest that the above suggestion not be followed. Because of the design of the u-joint grease does not flow well enough to lubricate the balls and cross piece and surely will not lubricate the bushings. I messed up a '32 NOS U-joint within ~ 1000 miles using grease.
The proper fix is to check the upper torque tube bushing and shaft, replace if worn and definately replace the seal behind the bushing that prevents the lubricant from migrating to the rear end. It is also critical to get the ball housing properly tightened. Gaskets and shims are supplied in the new gasket kits. Consult the Repair Manual for the proper shimming proceedure on the ball housing.

Darn it, I have to agree with both of you, JYD and Chipper about the lube oil migrating from transmission to rear end. It could be time for an okie bushing! I would think it would almost be impossible to stop any gear lube from dripping a couple of drops around the bell joint if the parts had been used and showed the wear for 70 or so years. I had good luck on my 53 by using the transmission gasket set that is being sold by The Filling Station or the Chevys of the 40s, I don't remember which one I ordered from.

The sealed bearing I have in my 35 Std has worked just fine for over 30 years and a lot of miles. The rear bearing retaining snap ring access pocket, if left unplugged, permits a limited amount of oil to pass from the transmission into the universal housing. The chassis lube also lubricates the drive shaft bushing and further impedes the migration of the oil to the rear end. You do it your way and I will do it my way. There is no oil on my garage floor and transmission never needs a refill. Well, nearly never. Seems I recall that in 1936 the facrory provided a drain hole to return the oil in the universal housing to the transmission but have no details on this or its effectivenss.
