On my 490 the distributor cap doesn't fit down very good. The cap sets on top of the rim on the dist. I think I have the right parts. A 366 dist. and the cap is the same as one on e-bay that is for my car. Does the gasket come level with the rim, and the cap just sit on the top of that? I just don't know if I am missing something. I hate buying parts not knowing if I am buying the right ones. I know a picture would cure alot here, but I'm not that good. Thanks for the help. Paul

I would invite you to scroll down to TECH TALK and select the "School is in Session" thread. Use the search tool to find the answer to your question. Lot's of info there. A gasket is NOT used and there is a raised spot on the distributor that mates with the cap.

If the distributor body is a diecast potmetal one,the raised circular diameter that locates the distributor cap may be distorted out of round?A possibility.

I think a 366 distributor is the wrong one. A 366 is a Delco Remy and 490s had a Remy or Conneticut. The Remy distributors are pretty tough to find since the pot metal fails on them. now that said, I have seen the light colored tan type distrubutor caps on 366 distributors not fit exactly right. I think the cap is what has shrunk. You can carefully trim up the cap with a scraper to make it fit better and see what happens.

I have an enclosed car. which should make it a 1922 or newer. The title I have shows it as a 1921. It was bought through Syler Chevrolet in Michigan. Sold to the guy I bought it from. Why it shows 1921 he did not know, but it is. I should just talk about it as a 1922. Thanks for the info. Paul

Thanks for the cap help. I did find that the Remy distributor was out of round. After finding the conter and placing the cover on it as best I could I think I have it. It has so many cracks in it I am near to getting a new body and replace the internals. But I just found out that the coil is bad. Is there a replacement coil for this that is newer, or do I stay with an old style. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Paul

Okay, a new distributor body is available from www.20schevyparts.com.If you do not care about judging and having the correct look you can purchase a 6-volt coil for a 1954 car and use that as your coil. Purchase the correct condenser for the 54 also and use it. You may get lucky by looking at some of their ignition aftermarket items and find a holder for the coil.
