Not really sure what you mean by Biggy back. Could possibly be an overdrive unit? The truck 3 speed tranny was pretty small in the case and the 4 speeds were bigger. two different 4 speeds were used, one for 27LM and early 28LO. the second type was used in 28 LP model and is a much better transmission with many parts used up through 36. The early optional 4 speed was wracked with problems. A lot of trucks I have seen had the early 4 speed replaced with the later one.

28 Chevy LO Capitol 1 ton, 28 National 2 dr coach, 71 Chevy Custom Camper 3/4 ton. Also 23 Oldsmobile Economy truck and a 24 Olds sport touring.

The 3 speed gearbox in 1927 LM trucks and earlier was essentially a passenger gearbox with a different rear mainshaft bearing retainer and uni joint housing ball seat to accomodate the larger truck uni joint.
The 1927 LM series trucks were only offered with a 3 speed gearbox. The early 1928 LO series had an optional 4 speed gearbox offered, was was replaced by a better re-ratioed 4 speed gearbox as standard fitment in the later 1928 LP series trucks.
An underdrive or overdrive would have been an aftermarket fitment.

I have documented my 45 years with a 1928 Chev Tourer, from 1973 to 2018, and regulary add other items that I hope are of interest to others. Your comments are most welcome. The story of the Red Chev can be viewed at http://my28chev.blogspot.com/

Gidday Fellas,

While we're all chatting about this "piggy back" box, tell me.....

The aftermarket, 28 Chev extra gear / gearbox that was available and I have forgotten the name of it? "Jackson" or something like that I think.... And yes I am probably wrong so please correct, but how rare are they and were they ever available out here in OZ and does anyone know of any fitted on cars out here???

A mate in Drouin as a 30's something Dodge coupe which he restored back to original condition and he had an extra gear put into that by a bloke who lives in Longwarry Victoria, and I think he ended up with another small gear-lever out the floor and there was quite a bit of work done to the internals of the gearbox, etc but it flies along the road just lovely and does hwy speeds so easily...

Just wondering??

Cheers Grant.

A gentleman in Omaha parted out a '27 and sold the engine and tranny on E-bay. Looked like another tranny was mated to it(factory?) with a forward facing shifter.?! Didnt know if anyone was familiar with that.

It was common in the 20s,30s and 40s for people to cut car frames down mount two transmissions in series, install a heavy duty rear end and use the resulting contraption as a tractor.

I helped a neighbor replace the blown engine, and transmission in his Farmall with a model A Ford engine, he put a second model A transmission behind the first one, we hacked out the original IH transmission to make room for the Ford stuff.
