These trucks were typically registered with the DMV when new using the engine serial number. That number was stamped on a flat surface adjacent to the distributer. As I understand it most states used that engine number for registrations until the mid 1950's. That is the number the DMV inspected when they verifyied the title for my '46 half ton. The truck had its original engine. If the engine in the truck you are looking at was replaced; someone may have replicated that engine number on a data plate that was fastened somewhere on the truck or stamped it on the frame. My '46 half ton also has a cowl tag serial number. The tag was fastened with clutch head screws on the passenger side, above the running board, just below the the cowl top. That number was and can be used to determine when and where the truck was built. Good Luck!!!

I know this doesn't pertain to the 46 model, but I have owned 55,56,and 57 model 1/2 ton pickups and all three had the serial numbers stamped on the frame. They were stamped in two areas both on the left frame rail, under the cab and at the front near the front crossmember.

The 1955-1957 passenger cars also had the serial numbers stamped on the frame. It was on top of the left side rail about under the drivers seat. Almost impossible to see unless the body was removed.

If anyone is interested in where the Model number and serial number for a 1946 GMC are located, I found mine about 12 inches back on the outside right frame rail. The numbers are stamped very lightly so if your frame has been painted the numbers might be filled in. These numbers matched the cowl tag and in my case the numbers are EC-102 2836. EC 102 is the model number and 2836 is the serial number. I would upload pictures but can't figure out how!
