I want to paint the steering column(mast)& related shifter items on my 47 Fleetline. Does anyone know of a good match without having a special mix made? Spray can would be nice but that's most likely asking too much.
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

My father found a spray can that was an exact match for the brown steering column and the taupe for the steering wheel at the local Tru-Value hardware store. I will get in touch with him and see what brand it was. I think its readily available. I should know later today.

I know chevsofthe40s & Filling station both sell the spray and brush on paint you are looking for.

Enjoy,

Michael,
The only paint I found in their recent catolog was for a 1941 which I believe is different than the 47-48s. If I'm wrong someone pls let me know.
Thanks

Is the taupe color the same one used on the column radios? I have a radio control for the steering column and it needs to be repainted but I couldn't find the correct paint either. I'd like to find out about the brown and taupe you're referring to.

Hi Dick, got the info from my Pop on the paint. The brand is carried by Tru-Value hardware stores and its called "XO Rust." similar to Rustoleum. Covers good and looks all the world like the original color on the '47. I'll try to get pictures of the column he sprayed if I have time tomorrow.

Here are the colors:

Brown Steering Column color: XO Rust “Seal Brown” #146522

Taupe steering wheel taupe color is Premium Décor “Toast” PDS43 #792757

They're both made by GPM , 201 Jandus Rd. Cary, IL. 60013-2889

Looks like you can get the brown ONLINE as well as the local store.

Thanks for the great info. Sounds like this is what I was hoping for. I assume the taupe color is for the light color on the 2 spoke deluxe wheel and not the hub on a banjo wheel. Pictures would be great if you have the time.
Thanks again

Daryl;
Went to local Tru Value store and they had both colors. Thanks for steering me in the right direction. Don't make a special trip for the pics.

Oh great! I'm glad that worked out. Thanks to my Dad, Novasscott for hunting these down. The Scotts are all about the local hardware store. Heck, all of our cars over the years have some hardware, paint, hoses, etc from the local Tru-Value. Too bad it just went out of business due to competition from the Lowes and Menards stores that went up. :(

Good luck with your steering column resto. Are you doing a full rebuild on the steering box & pitman arm as well?

No I am not doing the box & arm at this time. The steering isn't too bad. I hope that isn't a mistake but have chosen not to tackle it now.
Thanks again for your help.
We are also losing our local hardware stores in this area. Hate to see them go
I entered another posting today inquiring about which two tone paint combination(not color) to use on the wheel as I have two diff ones.
