I have to put a new cork on the gas gage so I pulled the tank out today. As long as it is out what is the best way to clean it out of any little pieces of crap inside. And what should the gas tank color be? Was it a flat, satin, or gloss black?

Just cleaned mine several weeks ago..
Drained all gas.

Filled with about 5 gallons hot water added Dawn dish soap and several dozen pieces of nuts washers and small bolts.

Shake tank so all sides get scrubbed. Drain water and repeat.

Removed all hardware with magnet. Rinsed tank with garden hose several min. Drained

Immediately added 1/2 quart acetone shake to cover all surfaces inside. This collects all remaining water. Drain acetone then repeat.

I added a little marvell mystery oil to about 1/2 quart gas sloshed it around the inside of the tank to coat with a little oil then drained it while I prepped tank for paint.
Worked well for me nice and clean inside.

After you had cleaned the tank and before the oil I would have lined the inside of the tank with either the Blue or Red tank liner. Let sit for a week and then re-install.

I am sure what you did will last for a period of time.
