Any thoughts as to the cause of gear oil leak through the front of transmission into the bell housing? Thanks Mike

Is it a 1936 Master or 1936 Standard....with a standard transmisson?

Are you sure its gearbox leak and not rear of engine leak. Is there any sign of oil on the outside where the trans meets the bellhousing or only at front of bell housing. Are there any strange noises from the trans. Tony

Sorry- 36 standard. I had a "pro" rebuild it some time ago. It only has 300 miles on a rebuilt engine. If I drive 5 to 50 miles and park there is a large puddle of gear oil on the ground. It lowers the oil level sufficiently after 50 miles that it is hard to shift and I need to refill. The higher gear oil viscosity # needed on this transmission is expensive and I don't dare take it for a run of any distance. Mike

Also - no leak at rear seal, no cracks in transmission case and drips out pan bottom hole in bell housing. Also looks to be coating my clutch. Mike Kanyer

I purchased a 1928 Touring that could empty almost all of the transmission fluid in just a few miles. NO leak when PARKED. Pulled the transmission and discovered the (PRO) that rebuilt the transmission had left out the bolt under the clutch arm pivot. This is a through and through hole. When the car was moving it directed the transmission fluid at this unfilled hole. You could also be loosing the oil through the front collar of the input shaft. Either worn out or perhaps broken.

Grizzly Sounds like you need to pull the trans. I suspect it could be like Rays situation with a missing bolt or oil travelling along the input shaft. If it is the latter oil would likely be coating the clutch plate because it will be acting as a slinger. This will be making it harder to shift gears by not releasing properly, the clutch plate is now ruined if this is the case. Tony

Tis question was asked about a year ago and the owner had a 1935 Standard - about the same as your 1936 Standard.After several attemps with no success he installed a seal in the front bearing retainer if I remember correctly.I have searched thru 1933-36 and the mechanical site and can not find the posts.The post was originated by Cufur or smoething like that( I know his actual name bt did not want to display it)...still searching...

My 36 standard also leaked significantly from the front of the transmission. There were other problems (shifing forks worn, etc) that made me pull the transmission. It turned out the pot metal/alumuminum bearing retainer was pushed forward and bent on the screw mounts--the so there was a big gap around the screw attachments. This allowed a lot of oil to leak. I also noticed that the spiral grooves in the retainer (which I guess are supposed to direct the oil back into the transmission) were completely worn flat. Replacing the bearing retainer (and the front bearing/retaining clip) mostly cured the leakiness. But it probably still leaks some--part of the design since no seal? It definitely drips some out the back around the ball housing.

after you take the transmission out and the pressure plate and clutch plate be sure and check the pilot bearing in the end of crank i have had this to happen and it causes the input shaft to drop out of center and wobble it works on the parts mentioned by 36 chev hope this helps

Thanks for the help. THis is one of those times I wish I had a Master so I could split the u joint. Backs goes the rear end. I'll let you know what I find Mike

You can chop out the rivets and bolt the U Joint back together.

Grizzly, If you want the bearing retainer, here is NORS one on ebay. But it ends soon--9 hours from now--I just now found the auction. 1932-36 Passenger (except 33-36 standard) transmission bearing retainer
