I'm a new owner (and new poster) of 28 National sedan. I need some parts advice. Are there new or reconditioned steering locks and ignition switches out there? I came across a posting from Bluezone for such new units that was several years old. Can anyone steer me in the right direction? Many thanks.

Welcome to Chevy Chat II. We are glad you chose to join us. You will get your questions answered here and will meet many fine folks. I know that someone is working on reproducing the switch. As to the locking of the steering, I recommend it be deactivated by removing the "tang" on the steering shaft. If you have a key and the lock works, then use it. The lock tumbler can be removed and have a key made, however removing the retainer pin is a major/major chore.

Hi guys,
In case I am missing something, happy to learn. This has come up before, but whats wrong with keeping the steering lock if its in good working order. Its actually listed on my insurance policy as a security device, and the times it has caused me problems in 38 years is somewhere between zero and minus 1.
Cheers
Ray
Some say "Street is neat". I prefer "1928 is great" I have documented my 45 years with a 1928 Chev Tourer, from 1973 to 2018, and regulary add other items that I hope are of interest to others. Your comments are most welcome. The story of the Red Chev can be viewed at http://my28chev.blogspot.com/

look under "ignition switch" an "ignition switch lock" (should say steering wheel lock) oh well!
I was working on reproducing a new switch but got sidetracked for a few months, bought a second 27 chev. I will continue the work this spring I hope.
let me know if you find them helpful, its a big file

I suppose if you had a 1932 or 33 you would use the "Free-Wheeling"?

Antique Mechanic,
Please clarify the tone of your response?
I asked a question supported with a statement of my experience, which appears not to your liking.
Your reply is verging on being an insult, so before it gets out of hand, please clarify.
Ray

Fellas, On the three of my 28s,only the Coupe has a perfectly functioning interlock mechanism, because, I actually have the key to it.... And yes, I use it all the time, especially when parking the car when I go to a restaurant (the Press Room) or movie house, like in Shepherdstown, WV.. http://www.yelp.com/biz/press-room-shepherdstownhttp://www.operahouselive.com/And when I get around to it, I will repair the other interlocks on the Roadsters so they work. It was a very neat feature that Chevy introduced in 1927, and is valuable to have functioning today as well. People are a bit shocked when I demonstrate this feature, they always say, "you mean that they did that back in 1928?" I would think in a judged competition, one would lose points for it not being correct. So, fix up your interlocks, and start locking your car when you park it.... Jay
