Is it normal of the distributor shaft to have an up-down play ? If that's so, how much would that be? Thanks.

I don't recall seeing any specifications on this but I would imagine .010 to .040 "( .3 mm - 1.2 mm ) up & down play...Not something I would be overly concerned with...unless there's so much "play" that the rotor is threatening to reconfigure the inside/top of the distributor "cap"...lol

...I thought perhaps the gentleman has the distributor out and on the "bench" and was referring to the "clearance" between the cam gear/collar and the distributor housing...?

When the distributor is removed from the engine it is normal for the shaft to move up and down = what feels like an excessive amount.

Thank you guys. Indeed that I was referring too, what sort of play would I expect between the gear and the housing with the distributor of the car. And one other question, perhaps some one knows, how does the 39 distributor differs from the 1940 one? At some point I bought what I believed to be a 39 but judging by the numbers may be a 1940 one. Thanks.

There were slight changes made to the distributor in 1940 due to the change in valve timing.Mainly the weights and springs were different. If a 1940 distributor is installed in a 1939 engine a little more fine tunining with the timing may be necessary. The distributor housing is a loose fit in the engine block also. It is more loose in some engines and causes no problem
