I have a few questions on a 1936 Master transmission.While in first gear I get this skipping whining sound , sometimes in reverse as well. 2nd and 3rd are just fine quiet and smooth.
I was told by a few that its most likely the main shaft bearings and that they would need to be replaced. So last week I got everything preped and pulled the transmission, ordered front and rear shaft bearings ect.. from FS , have my 35-36 manual and began to take it apart. I took the cover off on top to have a look, everything looked pretty good and clean. I continued taking it apart found the Bearings and replaced them with the new ones and then reassembled the trans and put it back in the car.
I thought Iam going to test this thing out before I put everything (Interior ect...) back together. With the car still being on jack stands, started it up put it in first gear and the noise is still there.
It almost sounds like a binding/ skipping noise and it sounds like its comming from the rear of the trans.
So this is where Iam at I still have the noise and now While the car is still on the ground engine off and in any gear the car starts rolling, what did I miss??? also Does anyone have any pictures of the rear trans mount to see if mine is installed correctly? I put it back how I found it and not 100% sure its correct. Can anyone help me out?? I look forward to your input. Thanks,Ken

I love a mystery so I'll keep an eye on this thread. If it rolls in any gear something is missing or broken.

have you checked the very obvious of something attached to the prop shaft , banging when it is going round? or maybe something sticking out and making a noise when the prop is turning.?

Have you got the selectors installed correctly ?

I would suggest looking at the bushings and the shaft for the first & reverse gears. I once found a bushing that was loose enough in a gear to rotate inside the gear at higher speeds. Made a heck of a noise but only at higher speeds in first gear. At the same time check all the gears for damage. If nothing is noted then check the alignment of the gears and shafts. Though remote it is possible for a bushing or shaft to be off centered or even the case to be mis-machined.

Thanks to all of you that replied. I rechecked everything taking everyones advice. I had it correct according to the manual. I am still not sure about the proper installation of the rear trans mount( if anyone has a picture or can tell me where to look would be helpful). I took it for a test drive everything shifts nice and smooth however I still have that noise in 1st gear at any speed that 1st gear allows. Thanks again, Ken
