I went for it and bought the car. Original mileage - 61143. Well worn but all original features and no modifications.
The first project is the clutch. The pedal feels like I am just pushing against a spring but no over-center feeling of disengagement like other cars/tractors I have driven. Is this normal? The car is hard to initially get into gear from a stop. Lots of grinding. Maybe the clutch just needs adjusting. Shifting seems fine both up and down shifting. I was double clutching just to be careful.
I also noticed that the battery appeared to be installed with a positive ground. The ammeter was reading correctly (charging while driving and discharge when turning on lights with engine off) but I thought this should be a negative ground car. When I get possession I will trace the wiring to see what is going on.
I guess I will be a regular here now that I have something to work on.

The clutch on these does not have the over center feeling. It just get progressivly harder as it goes down. There are two clutch adjustments.First the pedal stop adjustment."Stops" the pedal on the way out.Should be approx. the same level as the brake pedal. Then the free play "on top" is adjusted. Its a coil spring clutch and a carbon throw out bearing.Do check the gear oil level in the transmission. Not necessary to double clutch a Master but the syncro is a little slow. Many of these cars were generally worn out at 50,000 miles of driving with the poor oils, greases, roads and poor maintenance they recieved.Add this to being 70 years old and you can expect most anything....but its fun :)

Fred: First gear is non-synchro, so you will have to come to a complete stop to engage first gear...or double clutch. The engine has good low end torque and you may be able to lug it in second for a "5 mph stop" at intersections.
Tell us more about the car and maybe post some pictures too. We're glad to help as needed.
