Gidday fellas,

Just wondering if anyone has some finished photos of the front seat timber frame lower section as i am about to build one.
I have an old one to copy off from Monty but it is missing the main back lower piece and I just need a bit of a look before I start....

Hope someone can post one up or email me off line if you have to.. Thanks

Cheers Grant.

Grant , i dont have a 1928 picture , but do have a 1929 picture of a tourer seat. I tried to email , but your email may be incorrect in your profile, and sending failed all attempts.

Gidday Fellas,

many thanks to all that sent some photos through, very handy indeed.

Pete could you take a few when you get a spare moment of the upper sections of the seat timbers and also where it attaches to the centre posts, thanks

You seem to be getting the help you need which is great. My 28 has all its original timber and fittings so if there's something that you are not sure of just ask. I do know that some people modify to suit. For example the metal bin under the front seat can be deepened and of course people nowadays tend to be taller than they were in 1928 so there is the opportunity to move the front seat back. Mind you that reduces the legroom in the back but then again there's a lot there.

Gidday Terry,

Yes, I have that in mind to move the seat back about 1" cause at 6'2" and about 100kgs I find it a little cramped, thanks for the offer on any info.

grant, sorry i haven't got photos or access to the top section as the upholstery is fitted. As far as I can see there is a 25x20mm rough sawn piece of timber attached to the 2 vertical members at 125mm off seat frame but thats as far as I can see.

The top of the front seat joins the centre posts with a curved piece of wood approx 50mm x 30mm. you will need a pattern as it also has a twist in it. Unfortunately the 28 tourer I'm restoring at the moment went to the trimmers 2 weeks ago. As for moving the rear of the seat back you will have to modify the steel side pieces to fit. What I do is simply install less padding in the seat back.

Gidday fellas,

Pete: No problems at all, I'm do'in a bit of head scratching at the moment so a little more won't kill me.

Neil: regarding the less padding in the seat idea, Ray (1928isgreat) suggested this to me which came directly from his auto trimming mate in Melbourne, and is probably worth doing.
With that and the seat pushed back 1" leg room would be very nice I would imagine, anyone else want to chip in and comment if you have gone down either path.

You could always shorten your legs.

Seriously for a moment, the thinner seat back and the seat frame moved back 1" would give you 2", which should be a great improvement for leg room.

Being a little guy I dont have that problem, very close to needing a cushion on the back rest of my modern motor.

Keep up the good work young fella, I find your blog very enjoyable

Gidday Peter,

Thanks mate, I'm glad you like it, got a little info and a laugh out of it but the best bit is yet to come this year so stick around as I try and become a master craftsman/woodworker and have to tackle the rear tub section orangeupset then it will be full steam ahead for the rego plates to be screwed on and the old canvas water bag swinging off the radiator..

Thanks for taking a interest..

Grant,

I agree the best is yet to come. I will eagerly be watching for your posting on spraying the undercoat, the 5 coats of full gloss back acrylic on the gaurds, followed by the 3 coats of clear.

The perfect finish for a great car. You may have to change the name from Monty the Chev to Monty the Magnificent.

Keep up the good work.

Ray

Guys,

I am starting to worry. This kid is starting to act like he knows what he is doing.

Good stuff Grant, keep it up, at least I will have something to sit on next time we go for a ride.

Cheers

Ray

More power to you Grant, you are on a roll.

You should be proud of what you have achieved so far, and as I always say, the best is yet to come.

Have sent you an email with a measurement.

Cheers

Ray

Grant, I think you will need to make a former up out of plywood with the multiple curves . I think that laminating thinner strips of wood can then be glued together to the curves on the back off the seat. Also i believe that steel straps were bent to the shape on the outsides, where they attach to the tourer centre panels.
