My 28 has a oil drip from the front main or the timing gear cover. I have changed the oil pan gaskets but oil seems to be coming from the bottom of the timing gear cover.Any help on what to do next to stop the drips would be appreciated.

Hi,
There has been a lot of discussion about this on the forum.
Its a common problem.
Normally from the timing cover itself between the gasket and the cover.Only fix is to remove the cover and check for distortion of the cover around the bolt holes, panelbeat them back into level,a new gasket and a good flexible sealant. The screws when overtightened distort the cover.
If you search the forum you will find more information,or perhaps someone else will jump in with some more help.

An idea to stop the thin timing gear cover from distorting when tightening the screws,is to cut a re-inforcing plate from 1/8" sheet steel,so that it will fit over the outside of the cover. You may need slightly longer screws to attach the plate & the timing gear cover, but it will stop the thin cover from distorting, and more importantly, leaking.

Hi all,

To extend CJP's suggestion, I suppose you could create the reinforcing ring in two pieces (top half and bottom half), so it could be put on without the need to remove the crank pulley and cam cover.

Cheers, Dean

Thanks for the quick response and helpful info. I guess I will need to pull the cover to check the drain passage that I didn't know about, it could be part of my problem.
