the shaft that the fan bolts to moves in / out almost 1/8".

is this normal?

what is the spec?

how do i correct it?

No, that is not normal and there should be no end play at all.

With the impeller resting against the thrust washer, which is between the body of the water pump and the impeller itself, the pulley should be pressed onto the shaft until it just touches the front bushing flange.....thus there will be no end play.
