Hello All -

Looking at 61 Corvair 500 4 dr. Appears to be in good shape. Need sound advice from you people as to perhaps weak points, what to look for, personal opinions as to car itself, and anything you can teach me on. All thoughts and opinions will be appreciated. Only option I can see is the P/G and AM radio.
Mileage about 50 something. Not verified. Straight and clean. Nice interior.

Thanking you all in advance.

Jim.

Look for under body and floor rust. Front crossmemmber rust. Oil leaks are common but most can be repaired. Few places will work on a Corvair - is there a Corvair shop or mechanic in your area? Some things you can do with the help of a shop manual.
If not already done brake lines are often rusted and should be replaced. Of ten the bottom of the gas tank is rusted inside.
A 1961 500 4 door has very little value and demand so get it cheap.
They are a fun car to drive and play around with and many parts are readily available

Thanks for your reply Gene. Thats about what I was looking for. Drove a couple of them in early 60's and was impressed. Thought that maybe one of my grandkids might be interested in old cars and this one would be a good starting point. Should be able to repair the car myself if needed. Will see how reasonable I can get car before commiting.

Thanks again.

Jim.

I agree with ChevNut. Also look up under the rear roof overhang. Four doors rusted here from the inside out.Oil leaks can be fixed. Nearly everything is available.Check out Clark's Corvair. I think the early 4 door's had nice body lines, have owned many. Currently have a 60 4 door,64 conv,62 Corvan.

That was the 1965 and up with the "glued in" windshields.

Thank you to Corvaired, The53TwoTen, ChevGene, and lastly, but not leastly to Mr. Dog.

I really appreciate the extra comments and thoughts. Every little bit helps.

If this deal goes through, will have to ask for parts suppliers as I see nothing in F/S catalogue.

Jim.
