There should be another plate called a data plate with the unit serial number of the car on it. It'll be right next to the plate you describe.

The XE JA would indicate your car is indeed a 1939 Master deluxe The JA is that designation for Master Deluxe, the XE would have to do with Export, and possibly the location of assembly factory or factor of origin.

Above this plate, there is another that off, where they can read with some difficulty, the letters XEJA andthe number 663, recorded.
If you want I can send photos via email, to assist in their identification.
Send any message in my email reply with photos. I can not put the photos on the forum, because I am not affiliated with the VCCA.
Congratulations for the beautiful photos of the Chevy coupe.
Thank you.

Thanks for help.
The number 663 would be the numbering of the body, in this series for export, as in other masters that I have seen on the internet, the numerals that identify the body has six digits that identify the sequence and manufactures? The color indicated (No. 1) this code would be black?

The trim and paint numbers are not the numbers used on US cars.
On US cars there are two number plates on the side of the cowl. One has the serial number of the car....and example would be 9 JA 6 21212
The other plate would have the body style number, body number (example N 12354) paint and trim numbers.

Yoyr car was assembled by GENERAL MOTORS DO BRASIL, S.A., SÂO PAULO, BRAZIL, and was assembled I think from kits of parts from Chevrolet Boxing Plant, Bloomfield, New Jersey. Our local plant, that opened December 1938, built some 1939 Chevrolets as well. It ceased assembly of cars with the outbreak of war in September 1939, and was bombed 30 November 1940.

I have found a printed photograph of the plant taken during the war. It seems that they made a lot of gas producer conversions using charcoal. I wonder if your car was converted during the war? This was before alcohol was being produced from sugar!

The car does not seem to have been converted. The carburetor, fuel pump, I seem to be the original. In Brazil, during World War II, the cars were converted to use syngas, which was extracted from the charcoal. They used large tanks and reservoirs outside, stuck in the bumper brackets. When the war ended, these devices were removed, but they were the marks and holes to install the equipment. This is my Chevrolet, has no trace of having been converted to the use of syngas or other fuel.

The GMOO wartime book that I have a Xerox of shows what i think is a '42 with a gas producer unit on the back of the car. GM Suisse in Switzerland also built such units for all manner of vehicles.

I just wish I knew who has the last '39 Southampton built car..it was rumoured to have been sold in Italy!

Charcoal gas producers were also used here in Aus but I dont have any photos of the units or installations. Some of my parents friends burnt their cars out with these units.

The worst was the smell and smoke, besides the low performance of cars.
Today, these kits syngas is much sought after by collectors
