Bought a 48 late 2010 which I believe has the original 216. It ran ok initialy, but the copper mesh air filter was not installed on the carb.
The filter was cleaned with solvent and dried. After re-installing the clean filter, the engine seem to choke down and sputtered and now has a very high pitch rattle. A heavier sound than a tappet noise
Removed the filter which will be replaced.
To be safe, the W-1 has been completely overhauled and re-installed with out air filter.
Lifters and rocker arms seem to be functioning ok. The noise is still there and I am wondering if particles of mesh from the filter could have been pulled in the combustion chamber.
Obviously, I am a novice and would appreciate any thoughts or opinions about the rattling noise.
Thanks, Glen Adams, Granbury, TX (glen-adams@att.net

I think you are correct in your thoughts. Probably time to pull the head, clean of the combustion chambers and have the valves ground (don't let them sell you hardened seats)

I cleaned what appeared to be an original filter on my 216 recently...turned out to be a copper colored plastic...what the...? I suppose that's less harmful than metal making it's way in to my motor...

I bought an air cleaner for my '33 but it didn't have the mesh in it. I used the mesh from a chore boy but I am afraid to put it on the engine because I was worried that a piece of it might get in the engine. I run a later model oil bath air cleaner on it. I guess I will just keep the original on the shelf.

We ran a compression test. 1-4 were normal. 5&6 failed. Will remove the head and inspect. Then have a valve job done. Hopefully, we will be able to determine noise source when the head is removed. Comments appreciated.

Be very careful when you remove the head. Try not to disturb the headgasket. When you have two adjoining cylinders that are low or no compression it is likely there is a blown headgasket between the two cylinders. If you inspect the gasket closely you should identify the flaw. If so, you may only need a new headgasket.

Comments appreciated. Whenever you get a bad reading, squirt oil into the cylinder and re-check. If compresion comes up the problem is rings. If it does not change the problem is in the top.

I've used the chore boy mesh on my 32 and have had no problems. Its been in for over ten years. Washing first in clean solvent, drying and then re-oiling is the procedure I used.

I second Ray's suggestion to look for blown head gasket. If it is blown, look also for "erosion" of head or block at point of break in gasket. If was running a long time with blown gasket, a slight erosion of block or head (or both) between cylinders may have resulted.
