I seen a Chevy streight 6 motor at the wrecking yard , they just got in a big truck with it in it. The motor looks to be a 235 but I dont know if a bigger size was use for such a large truck.

Its in a 56 Chevy truck and the guys at the yard said it ran dam good.

I would suspect that it is a 1959 or later engine because the oil filler cap is in the center of the cover. In 1956 it was to the front of the cover.
The 6000 series trucks came with a 261 engine If it did have a 6 Cyl. engine.

C6000 and C6500 trucks did come with a 261 engine but I have found that thrifty farmers in the area (they bought the C6500 trucks with 261 engines) often kept them for many years and used them a lot on the farm. After the 261 engines became scarce many of them replaced them with a 235 salvaged out of a pickup rather than spring for a overhaul on the 261. I have found several with 235s. Check the casting numbers and the engine number to assertain that it is a 261.

Zoom in on the righ side near the starter. The two vertical bars cast in the block above the sarter indicate its a 261, but check engine number/casting date to deremin the year.

The fender emblems indicate the truck is a 57 model. The oil filter looks to be from a 235. All 261 engines that I have been associated with have had the different oil filter set up.

The last letter in the engine number would be TA, K, L, ...this is going from 1956-1959.
that is as far as my numbers go. The numbers on that engine look like it was restamped.

Edmond41, if Gene dosen't have the answer it's not out there. You'll have to get us the casting number or casting date to pin this down. However it dosen't really matter as they are all the same from 54 through 62 (almost). Buy it, rebuild it, you'll love it.

Casting numbers are below and to the right of the Dist. Seven digits begining withe 37 or 38. date code is behind (slighly above) the front of the starter and hard to see if greasy. Three or four digits. Alpha-xx-x.
