The dealer option rear fender gravel guards on the '48, were chrome or stainless? The ones that COT40's and TFS offer with the "hump" at the bottom to match the rocker panel are chrome and COT40's describes them "as original"? The ones that I am familiar with do not have the "hump" and are stainless. However, in the pictorial history book, their is a picture of the dealer offered options and you can plainly see the "hump". But, chrome or stainless??? FYI I received the ones from COT40's last night, really disappointed in the quality, workmanship. They're going back!

Don't know the answer to the stainless question but I too purchased the same from COT 40's years ago and the fit was WAY OFF.They need to be bent to fit and aligning and drilling mounting holes literaly imposible.I have since filled the holes and re-painted.I will never install those metal things again, its rubber now

I've seen the stainless gravel shields...ain't they a cry'in shame ? The spot welds showing through to the good side . Geez , what junk ! Think I'll just stick with the rubber...And not that cheaper glue-on crap COT 40's also sells...I've seen them in "real-time" and they's some sorry stuff , too . They just look so ill-fitting ! They do sell higher priced rubbers...guess there O.K.

Are we talking a poor finish (like the welds showing through) on the hump version or just the plain version? I have the plain version and like you all say, pretty sad with the weld marks showing through. They are shiny, but not very strong. I haven't seen the hump versions in person. If they're any good, they've been on my list of things to buy, since they are supposed to be the original style.

The 1948 accessory booklet shows only the ribbed type. Describes them as being stainless steel. The 1947 parts book lists them as part # 986001 and Chrome. The 1948 accessory list shows the 986001 (plain ?) and 986148 ribbed (stainless).
It looks as if the ribbed was new for 1948.

If it helps, I have a 37K original Fleetline and it had ribbed stainless gravel guards.
