my '31 has several bent push rods. most only 1/8" or so off being staight. but one has a 1" kink in it. i would guess a stuck valve caused it. the valves seem free now. should i try to straighten them? what is the tolerance allowed? where can i buy replacements?
i also need several of the little wicks that oil the top of the push rods. how can i prevent this from happening in the future? most of the valve lash adjustments were close to zero. it is a wonder it ran as nice as it did. what can i do to prevent this from happening in the future? and other than replacing the push rods is there any other maintenace i should do before closing it up.

thanks for any info

joe

Push rods that are only slightly bent (say less than a 1/4" runout)can be straightened cold by just using a flat surface and a heavy hammer and going at it gently. I wouldn't try it with one that has been bent more than that, because it may well be weakened by having been deformed so much.

Replacements are available, both new (reproduction or NOS) ones and used ones from a number of people who frequent this site. Just post what you need in the "Parts Wanted" forum and you'll be off and running. You can also get them from the Gary Wallace (mailto:chev4cyl@charter.net) or from Billy Possum (www.billypossum.com) and from other vendors. The same is true of the felt wicks -- they are sold in sets of 12 by the Filling Station and others.

The best thing to do to prevent this is to avoid leaving the engine in one position for a long time, which allows the valve stems to corrode in place in the guides. If you start it up or at least crank it over every couple of months, this shouldn't happen. If you DO have to put it in long-term storage, and/or if a valve, lifter, or rocker arm does get stuck, "Marvel Mystery Oil" works well at both preventing the problem and freeing them up if it does happen. Just liberally cover valve stems, rocker arms and lifters with MMO and you should not have a problem.

Hope that helps.

All the Best, Chip

Thanks for all the info.

my '31 does not have the big felt wick that goes accross the top of the rocker arms. is this just for noise abatement?? would it help with oiling the valves etc???

The rocker arm oiling pad was strictly an aftermarket item and your car never came with one from the factory.

Both, most importantly keeps oil on the rocker arms.
