Hello again, In a previous post we talked about a inline fuel filter installation for my 28. Having problems finding one that will have a hard line hookup rather than rubber fuel line and hose clamps. Does anyone know of a brand of filter that might work. Tried a glass filter but the threaded ends of the filter are not compatible threads. 1/8 pipe thread seems close but will not seal. Thought about pulling apart fluxing, reassembling then soldering fittings? Your thoughts????

You don't really need and inline filter as there is a filter in the top of the vacuum tank and another one at the carby inlet.
Ive done around 30,000 miles in Chev 4's and never used an after market filter. In fact in my 28 cabriolet I removed the filter in the vacuum tank as you have to take the top off to clean it. I just use the the one in the carby inlet and only clean it if the car plays up. Its very easy to clean, undo the bolt trought the brass carby inlet, remove the wire guaze from around the bolt and clean it.
Also you have to be very carefull when using an aftermarket inline filter as the vacuum tank isn't strong enough to pull fuel through some of the filters. I'd like a $ for every one I've helped the owner take when off when the car was playing up. One bloke told me after we took his out the car seemed like it had been turbocharged.

Hey Chris,

I may not know much about ya fella, but what I have learned from your postings, both new and old is you are a bit of a dinosuar. You dont have any time for anything new or of a slight improvement. An in line fuel filter can only help keep the system clean. As for that 30,000 miles you have done, was that on the road or a trailer. If I had a dollar for every filter I that I knew caused a problem with a vac tank, you know, I would have squat, zero, zilch. Now If I had a dollar for every original fuel system I have seen in USA and British cars causing problems where the original fuel system was used with no modern support, well fella, I may have enough to shout you a slab.

You obviously still have a few years left in you, open your mind, take in some of these ideas from ones younger than yourself, does not mean they are smarter than you.

I have attended a few vintage and classic Chev rallies in the last few months, and blow me down, more had in line filters than did not.

I only hope your thoughts about originallity versus practicallity ae not the normal way of thinking in NSW, otherwise I am off to see Henry on the dark side.

Are you in a club, and if so do your thoughts represent the majority of the club, or are you a loner on the edge.

Thats enough from me unless you want to debate the subject a bit more

siging off now.

I run an inline filter back at the tank out let, and in the last 2 months have had to change it twice as the fuel around here is terrible, just stopped running altogether, you can get a glass tube type with a cleanable filter and a 5/16" bsp ends so you can tap straight into it. Picked one up at my local parts dealer for $14 or look on line, My vacuum tank doesn't have any filter left.I found the original brass screen let alot of finer stuff thru, and I don't have a filter at the carby either?? I'd say it as better to filter the fuel before it gets into the vacuum tank too, RAY

Hi Guys,

I have ran a Ryco Z12 plastic body fuel filter 3 inches before the vac tank for the last 30 plus years. Change it about every 12 months, never had any problems with it being in line.

As your father said boys "use protection"

Cheers

Ray

Some say "Street is neat". I prefer "1928 is great"

I have documented my 45 years with a 1928 Chev Tourer, from 1973 to 2018, and regulary add other items that I hope are of interest to others. Your comments are most welcome. The story of the Red Chev can be viewed at http://my28chev.blogspot.com/

Been using a brass topped sediment trap with fine brass gauze as a filtering medium(same as most cars with mechanical fuel pumps) for over 25 years now.No probs whatsoever.Just a clean out every 6 - 12 months, maybe a new bowl gasket at the same time, and no trouble running a vac tank.

In reply to the initial question.
Major filter manufactures as Wix and Fram do have that information in their paper catalogs and your local auto parts store should have it.
Online I only found Hastings www.hastingsfilters.com had some info under catalog information/ size chart search. You can click on the part number and get a picture.

As an afterthought, actually Hastings is owned by Baldwin filters and their site may give you more information.

The 30,000 miles in Chev 4's was driven on the road, as well as the 88,000 miles I've done in my 34 Master Chev.
I'm in 2 Chev clubs (40 years in one) and two other vintage clubs.
And I'm into highly modified cars as well, including a Commodore race car.
I offer my advice for what it's worth, you don't have to take it.

Good Afternoon to you Chris.

As me dad said to me, you can fool some of the people some of the time, but not all the people all of the time. Being a retired gent, I have plenty of time to study places and people. I have spent many hours reading postings on this site going back many years, and you know what, yours stand out from time to time.

Your obviously a man of the world, as we may both be. But one thing is for sure my friend, I have worked out how you operate and treat others on this site.

My observations about the chevguroo are as follows;

1. You never come in early to offer assistance, but cleverly come in later, critiscing advice others have given and setting your self up as some Chev Grand Poo Bah, even though as strange as it may seem you may have never done that repair yourself.

2. You quote all these miles driven like a badge of honour, yet your cars are trolley jockeys.

3. I would have thought if your into modified cars, you would want 28 Chevs to be on the road as safe and the best mechanical condition as possible, even if that includes a few minor tweaks.

4. You say you offer advice, I think you offer your opinion.

If it looks like a duck, and sounds like a duck, well in this case its a dinosuar.

This thread has become personal. I will watch it closely over the next 24 hours to see if it is necessary to lock.
