Well, after looking for 2 years I found the serial number plate for my 31 sedan under the garage tv. I knew I had it somewhere.
It is apparently zink and is badly worn. The Chevrolet emblem is visible but the whole lower right corner is worn off to the metal.
The serial number 47821 shows because it was stamped very deep.
The question is how to clean it up enough to get the rest of the #. Wire brush/chemicals??

The serial number plate on my '31 was thrown away with the rotten wood by a pryor owner. I found a reproduction plate on ebay, and the seller stamped my number in the plate before mailing it to me. The reproduction plates are also available from catalogue suppliers, and a local trophy company could engrave the numbers for you.

Thanks, Sid. I know that FS has the repro plates available but what I would like to do is find out the characters before the number that identify the factory etc. If I can find that out without damaging the plate I will just use the old beat up plate.

The AE number might be closer to the LH side of the plate. I have one at home I can try to clean. I can't use it anywhere as all the nail holes are gone. I know you don't want to get too rough with them. Some are real hard to read like the Brownie troup was doing them one day & the next day they had the Hulk stamping them. I kind of suppect this is what has happened with Arturo's plate on his 38 from another post. I would do the best you can before buying a repop..Joe

Oh, yeah, it will go back on the car. It still has 2 holes left. I would just like to find the rest of the number if I can. Thanks, Steve

There are a few techniques to ascertain the stamped numbers. First use a soft lead pencil rubbed over a piece of paper over the numbers. Sometimes you need to adjust the pressure on the pencil to get the numbers. Then there is the acid method where an acid is used to eat away at the soft (not stamped) areas first. There are a few more that can determine the densification caused by stamping.

Use of a magnifying glass is helpful. I did that after cleaning and light steelwool and could barely make out. Even had the verifing athurity use the magnifying galass to check it.
Then I got one made up off e=bay by a guy in Argentina that was exact duplicate.
