It has been suggested to me, instead of converting to 12 volts, it is easier to go to 8 volts. this would be achieved by replacing the battery with an 8 volt unit and adjust the regulator settings. There will be no need to change any bulbs and will make the starter motor engage with more grunt. Horn will be louder.
What do you think?

Reduce your chance for problems. STAY WITH 6-VOLTS. If your car had needed 8-volts, Chevrolet would have produced it that way.

I agree with Ray. His logic is sound. dance

I contend that if everything else is in good order, i.e., starter, ignition, carburetor, fuel pump, etc. then the designed 6 volts are adequate. Good working 6 volt sealed beams will light up the road farther down the road than you'll need to see. If you have to grind and grind on a 6 volt to get it started then a 12 volt is merely spinning the engine fast enough to overcome a problem of some sort. Think about it. idea

If something like a radio, disc player or whatever needs 12 volts, use a battery or good quality "jumper" for the temporary power source. beermugs

Good luck,

I was having a problem with slow cranking. I rebuilt the starter and no change. I replaced the cable with an 00 cable and no more problem.

Your 6V battery could be bad. They are about 50 bucks here in NC. Mine starts my 41 real well and the engine has real good compression. So I don't think the fault is with 6V, per se, but something else in the starting mechanism. Good luck with identifying what it is.

Thanks for the feedback,
Everything is fine, starts good. The main reason was to have brighter headlamps without going down the track of running sealed beams. I am a bit of a purist when it comes to restoring cars. I am restoring a '69 Morris Cooper S at the moment and it will be original when completed, so I understand your comments.
Cheers,
