Were they ever used or are they aftermarket?

We're talking about covers for the grease fittings.
"Zerk Covers" is a misnomer. Zerk fittings were not used on these early Chevys -- they used Alemite fittings, which have a pin-type bayonet fitting for the grease gun to attach to the fitting.
The Alemite covers are chrome-plated small caps which twist onto the alemite fittings to keep them clean between greasings. As the Scrapyard Hound says, they were not original to the car, but were an aftermarket accessory.

Thanks for that. In Australia we just use a rag to wipe the nipple before greasing.

I have a hilarious response for that, but think it would be wisest to save it for another venue!
Seriously, though, it's the same here. Most people do not use the covers on their Alemite fittings.

Chip, living on the bottom part of the globe makes those Aussies do strange things! I have been told that they have many really strange mateing customs.

Speaking of Alamite covers. I got dinged ten points for not having them when I got my 31 coupe judged at Flint.

C'mon guys, mind out of the gutter. Down here we call them grease nipples, you call them Alemite fittings. A well known Lubrication Company in Australia as well. But I enjoy the ribbing and enjoy a good laugh.
Cheers, Alan
