Just removed the back seat cushion from my 490 which I've only had a few weeks. Found what appears to be a rocker arm cover with a thick felt pad inside. It is held by two studs with thumbscrews. Didn't see a gasket. Is this an aftermarket accessory, and how hard is it to come by?

Most likely from a later chevy. There are no holes to put the studs in on a 490 head.

The single piece rocker cover with felt pad you describe, for a 4 cylinder, is used on the 1926, 27, and 28 Chevrolet. 1925 had a 2 piece cover (essentially 2 identical halves). Prior years of the basic models (i.e. the 490 and the Superior) up through 1924 had no cover at all. The earlier Model H 4 cylinder model 1914-16 had a cover which was plated and had a line of holes (breather/oiling holes) down the sides. As did the larger F, FA, and FB models.

Must be an accessory- I was looking through a 1923 Sears catalog and found one, listed for the 490. Here's my engine , without the lid but studs are visible.

Hmmmmmm! It seems like you never can be absolutely sure about the parts and accessories to the old cars. The factory tells one story and the practice and findings are showing other solutions.

So there may be exceptions to most of the "absolutely true" histories about originality.

Thanks for the information.

490Touring,

Not sure if you are aware, but the oil can is missing from the firewall. That is what that bracket is for next to the steering column.

Cheers,
Gary

Nice and correct comment, Gary. It is the original type, and gives a very strong grip. You get a possibly missing oil can by Gary Wallace.

Bob Kerr bought me a correct holder in Flint. I appreciated that kind action, Bob.

In this case, however, there is absolutely no doubt that the factory built the 490 WITHOUT any rocker cover. This is simply an accessory after market item that has been added at some point in the car's life. There were no exceptions on this topic.

Yes , I knew that's where the oil can goes. I have one that will fit but is not correct. Will pick up a correct one before show season.

Solan - Warning: I bought one of Gary Wallace's 1912-31 oil cans. It sure is pretty, but it does not work on a 490 with the wire-type holder shown in the photo. It's too tall and interferes with the hood. I use it for a garage decoration.

If anyone know where to get an original 490-style oil can, I need one.

I do not know why the maker made the nozzle longer, but no need to worry. The present NORS oil can has a somewhat longer nozzle than the original one. I suggest you could screw the wire-type holder a bit lower on the fire wall. I moved my short type can straight over to the original wire-type holder without any problems when I got the right one.

You may find the shorter type oil can some times on eBay. The original color should be bronze/copper painted.

Thanks, I'll watch eBay. I don't want to move the oil can wire holder. If I'm lucky enough to have an original holder on my car, I want to leave it in the original location.

can you help me to figure out how to include a photo wit a posting/reply

do you have a simplier method than the one on the "help" line

"To place an image within a message, simply use the following Markup Tag:

Code
  [image]http://www.url_to_image.com/image_name.gif[/image]

For example, if you have an image called cateye.gif and its available from your own website at http://www.mywebsite.com/pics, then you would use the following image markup:

Code
 [image]http://www.mywebsite.com/pics/cateye.gif[/image]

I hope thanks ron nice picture
